People Watching Whale

Whale watching is all about getting on a boat and venturing forth to get a closeup view of a whale. However, sometimes things can get a little confused and it becomes the people who are being watched.

Today was one of those days. When this whale watch boat in the Bay of Fundy off Digby Neck in southwestern Nova Scotia stopped to watch a mother humpback whale and her baby lazing on the surface, the tables suddenly got turned.

Captains of whale watching boats on Digby Neck have some hard and fast rules when it comes to whale watching and one of these is not to approach too close to the whales for fear of disturbing or frightening them.

But when your engine's shut off and your floating there, what's a person to do when junior suddenly sticks his head out of the water beside you for a closer look. Sit there, of course, and look back until he decides he has seen enough and moves off.

He may be a baby, but he tops the scales at about 15 tonnes and his mother is four times that and longer than the boat on which you're riding. Now whose frightened. But don't be, because these gentle giants of the deep are extremely friendly and often enjoy watching you and much as you like to watch them.

There are lots of places to go whale watching in Nova Scotia, so if you haven't tried it, what are you waiting for.
