The Halifax Farmer's Market- Nooks, Crannies and Nannies!

I love it when my sweet mumsy comes to visit and we can play tourist.  It's easier sometimes to stay home on a Saturday to mow the lawn and do laundry than to get out and experience your city.  This is just an excuse to abandon all of that, especially when your mom's already done it for you!

We did exactly that when we set off to explore the Farmer's Market on a Saturday afternoon.  I love the Farmer's market for all its nooks and crannies!

IMG_2342.jpgAs you wind through narrow hallways and stairwells, the sounds, sites and smells are sure to a-maze.  There are musicians, crafts, fresh baked goods and fresh veggies and meats all tucked in, here, there and everywhere!  If I were to draw a map of the inside of the Farmer's Market, I wouldn't know where to begin, but somehow I always manage to find the treasure within.

I'll admit to being a bit of a window shopper, but there are a few things I insist on picking up when I'm there.  One of them is Gouda Cheese that comes from That Dutchman's Farm.

Mmm, today I chose a medium Gouda flavoured with sundried tomatoes.  The Dutchman's Farm is famous for their Dragon's Breath Blue cheese.  I've never tried it on it's own, but last year I had it at it on some beef tenderloin at Le Caveau, the restaurant at Grand Pre Winery and it was delectable.  Speaking of Nova Scotia wines, we stumbled on a wonderful selection somewhere in the lower level of the market, a great spot to sample a few.

The other item always on my list is the samosa, so I followed my nose to some wonderful smelling Indian food, where I picked up some to go.

IMG_2347.jpgWe had lunch plans but the next time I go I'll try to pick up some of the curry chicken that was tempting us to switch plans.

While I was there, I noticed the folks from Cosman and Whidden Honey and we picked up some of that as well.  I have to say that I never was a fan of honey until I tried this honey.  The bees that make this are responsible, not only for this sweet treat, but also for pollinating local apples, blueberries and raspberries to name a few.  And the flavour of their nectar comes through in this cheerful honey.

IMG_2346.jpgWith our treats in hand it was time to go for some lunch.  We were off to the Henry House for a bit of pub grub.   I love the ambiance of this historic house, once the home of  William Alexander Henry, Father of Confederation.  We sat out on the patio and enjoyed the afternoon sun.   I stuck to my Diet Coke as I was driving but admit to a taste of my mom's ale, which featured a hint of apricot, as we waited for our lunch...a lobster bisque and side salad.  Cheers to that mom, it was a lovely day!
